Parents and Students, read carefully!
1. Any student who has an outstanding band uniform should have turned it in
last week before the game. Failing that, you should have returned it
immediately on Monday, however about 12 uniforms are still outstanding. How
about showing some consideration for Mrs. Evans and her committee and
bringing it in right away?
2. This is a message from Mrs. Zimmerman:
I wanted to remind all of you that we are selling poinsettia plants for the
holiday season. This fund raiser serves a dual purpose, providing decoration
for the stage at the winter concerts and making a small amount of profit for
the music programs. the plants are quite large - 3 plants per pot, 7.5 inch
pots and 15-18 blooms per pot. I have ordered them in all red, but if you
would like another color I could arrange that. The plants will be in a gold
foil pot cover and the cost is $18.00. If you are interested, please call or
e-mail me by Friday when I have to turn in the order to Walnut Springs
Nursery. At the moment we only have about 8 plants ordered and we usually
have about 20 plants on the stage. Please don't forget that Sat. is our
fruit and muffin delivery day. Frozen cookie dough will also be available
for sale. We need students to unload the truck at 7:00 and there is a sign
up sheet on the easel in each classroom. We will also need students later in
the morning to help customers load their fruit. Pam is trying to end the
pick up as close to 11:00 as possible, so please be prompt in picking up
your fruit and muffins.
3. I am requiring students who wish to receive a Band Letter to attend two
hours of fruit delivery days. I also encourage you all to start selling the
December sales. I imagine that more December forms will appear in the band
room very soon, and you can take them and arrange for delivery in December.
I am taking 6 cases to Virginia when I visit next weekend. I also am
delivering the fruit to my son's customers rather than having them pick it
up from River Hill, a HUGE selling point. Don't let the lack of money keep
you from the New Orleans trip when you have the opportunity to
raise it!
4. LOCKERS Parents - This is the biggest enduring problem in the band room.
I require students to bring a combination lock, register it, and KEEP ONLY
MUSIC RELATED MATERIALS IN THE LOCKERS. Not only are the unsecured doors an
invitation for theft, but several people, including myself, have hit their
heads on the opened doors of lockers. I have begun to place MY locks on some
of the lockers so that the students have to see me to get their stuff. Some
students have larger lockers than they need and I will not hesitate to
reassign lockers after this Friday. Tell your child they will be "evicted"
if they do not comply!
5. Uniform fees are so overdue! Some people are still behind from marching
season!
6. PRACTICE CHARTS ARE HERE! Each student is expected and required to
practice a minimum of 60 minutes a week PER ensemble. This means a student
in percussion ensemble and band needs 2 hours per week. And yes, Jazz Band
is an ensemble.
7. Absences have been a big problem this fall. I wish to make it clear that
concerts and rehearsals are a part of the curriculum. WORK is NOT an excused
absence, nor a reason to leave early or come late. Missing extracurricular
rehearsals such as Jazz Band I or Jazz Band II will result in removal from
that ensemble. These are predictable rehearsal times and performances are
posted well in advance in the handbook.
8. Tiny Tots Stuff -
I am looking for student volunteers from Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble
or Guard for the following positions:
A. Guys dressed up in suits like the Gingerbread man, etc.
B. People to lead guys dressed like the Gingerbread man, etc.
C. Elves and Snow sprites to help with seating and management of the kids
D. Narrators - read the script and intro the songs.
You MUST be present for all of the events or not at all. Dates are
December 4-5 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 and Saturday, December 8 from 1:00 PM to
3:30 PM.
For those of you unfamiliar with Tiny Tots, they are concerts with Kid
Appeal, shorter songs, seasonal tunes and educational as well. This year
they are going to meet the music of Louie Armstrong and Duke Ellington, hear
a couple of Hanukkah Songs and a couple of Christmas Songs, get introduced
to the instruments and see caricatures of Louie and Duke drawn by our own
Erin Swann and the Art Club. We'll get a lot of use of the caricatures for
future concerts, I think!
9. Winter Concert Reminders -
December 11 - Symphonic Band
December 14 - Wind Ensemble
January 10 Jazz Ensembles/Percussion Ensembles
10. Seating Auditions must be performed by Friday for Wind Ensemble!
11. The End - Whew!
Enjoy the Thanksgiving Break!
