Wind Ensemble
Mr. Wampler, Room 206
410-313-6927

The River Hill High School Wind Ensemble is the premiere wind band at RHHS, and admittance is through an audition only.  Students study with private teachers and perform at Grade 5 and 6.  Participation in Marching Band is mandatory, either as a marching member, a guard member, or as a manager.  The marching band performs at home football games, competitions and community activities.  After school rehearsals and performances are mandatory.  Excused absences include sickness, death in the family.  Contact Mr. Wampler for other absences.  Students are required to notify the director in writing PRIOR to the absence unless there is an emergency – otherwise absences will deduct points from your grade.

The Wind Ensemble performs at the Tiny Tots Concerts, Winter and Spring Concerts, Howard County Festivals, Spring Trips, and other scheduled activities with at least two weeks notice to students.  After school rehearsals and sectionals are posted in the band room.

Unlike most classes, assessment is witnessed and shared by an audience.  Therefore, appropriate student behavior, concert protocol and self discipline in preparation and in public becomes a part of assessment.

Grading Policy

Students are graded on:
1.       Daily participation, competency on their individual parts, appropriate rehearsal etiquette.
2.       Attendance of scheduled rehearsals
3.       Attendance at performances
4.       Written exams
5.       Playing tests

  2. Trumpets and Trombones need a straight and cup mute for concert season.  Tuba players will provide their own mouthpiece.  Percussionists must have a stick bag with concert, timpani mallets, hard and soft rubber mallets, yarn mallets and a pitch pipe.  These items will not be provided by the band!

  3.   Students are assigned lockers for the year and must provide their own combination lock and keep it reasonably clean.  Students may not enter or leave class during class or lunch for any reason.  Students may not store outside materials such as sports equipment, books, etc.  Students must keep their equipment inside the locker.

  4.  Each student MUST have a pencil for rehearsals.

  5.  Class attendance is mandatory.  Absence at scheduled rehearsals is mandatory.  Absence from either must be approved by the teacher.  Students must be responsible and give prior written notice of legal absences of rehearsals.

  6.  Students are given schedules of rehearsals, performances, booster activities and information integral for the success of the band.  They are responsible for making sure they and their parents are informed about events.

  7.  Absolutely no food, drink, gum or candy is allowed in the band room at ANY time!

  8.  Students in the band are expected to extend every courtesy and respect due each other, the teacher, and staff members at all times.  Profanity, verbal and physical abuse in any form will not be tolerated.

  9.  All rules in the student handbook will be enforced.

  10. Every student should have a copy of the Music Department Handbook.  If you do not have one, we will supply one upon request.

I have read, understand and will abide with all rules.
