Jazz Lab

            Jazz Lab is a unique music class that has Music Theory, Music Appreciation and History and Performance throughout the school year.  Students participation in Jazz Lab must master all of these elements to succeed throughout the school year.  Students should have private instruction, be willing to listen to jazz recordings, and be prepared to perform improv solos in performance.  Students need a music staff notebook, a notebook and should consider the purchase of their own fakebook.  

Grading Policy 

Students are graded on:  

1.       Theory tests and homework assignments.

2.       Scales, Modes and chords.

3.       Basic Piano Skills.

4.       Competency on heads (written music).

5.       Improv skills

6.       Jazz Project  

Class Rules and Expectation 

  1. Students are to be in the room on time with the appropriate materials for instruction.  Guitar players are responsible for all cords on a daily basis.   

a.      Trumpets and Trombones need mutes.  Percussionists must have a stick bag with sticks, brushes, and yarn mallets..  These items will not be provided by the band!  

  1. Students are assigned lockers for the year and must provide their own combination lock and keep it reasonably clean.  Students may not enter or leave class during class or lunch for any reason.  Students may not store outside materials such as sports equipment, books, etc.  Students must keep their equipment inside the locker.  
  1. Each student MUST have a pencil for rehearsals.  
  1. Class attendance is mandatory.  Absence at scheduled rehearsals is mandatory.  Absence from either must be approved by the teacher.  Students must be responsible and give prior written notice of legal absences of rehearsals.  
  1. Students are given schedules of rehearsals, performances, booster activities and information integral for the success of the band.  They are responsible for making sure they and their parents are informed about events.  
  1. Absolutely no food, drink, gum or candy is allowed in the rehearsal rooms at ANY time!  
  1. Students in the band are expected to extend every courtesy and respect due each other, the teacher, and staff members at all times.  Profanity, verbal and physical abuse in any form will not be tolerated.  
  1. All rules in the student handbook will be enforced.  
  1. Every student should have a copy of the Music Department Handbook.  If you do not have one, we will supply one upon request.
